Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

The gold sounds

BOYS’ BASKETBALL /// Acorn All-Stars

From the smoldering catacombs of Acorn Sports Island, which can be seen through the sublime green smog of Monster Island where Godzilla vacations in sunglasses and fruity mocktails adorned with regular-sized umbrellas while clutching his first Academy Award after 69 years and 38 movies, the sports editor and Snot Otter have cast their votes. The Acorn All-Stars for high school […]

A ceremony will be held later this year. Sanderson, a 2001 Buena High grad, was a goal-scoring soccer wizard who excelled for Pac-12 […]

Moorpark baseball team, with second skipper in 30 years, seeks 15th straight CIF playoff appearance

For the first time in three decades, there’s a new skipper in the Musketeers’ dugout. Aaron Garcia, a 2002 Moorpark High grad, is the new head coach of the school’s baseball team. He has taken over for Scott Fullerton, who guided the Musketeers for 29 seasons. Garcia knows he has enormous cleats to fill: Fullerton directed the Musketeers to 14 […]

La Reina’s last tango on the pitch

Girls’ soccer team secures league crown, notches first CIF playoff win since 2012

Pia Sullivan was taking a nap after school on what she called a random Wednesday in the middle of the soccer season. “I woke up, and my phone was blowing up,” the La Reina High freshman center back defender said. Sullivan didn’t wake up from a nightmare. She woke up to one. The terrible news on Jan. 24 was true: […]

The journey ends for Moorpark seniors

PLAYOFFS /// Winter report

A special senior class walks off the soccer pitch. The seniors on the Moorpark High girls’ soccer team won four straight Coastal Canyon League titles. Last year’s squad earned CIF-Southern Section and SoCal regional championships. The ending was bittersweet: Moorpark lost 4-0 at Westlake in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs on Feb. 10. The Musketeers opened […]

Super Bowl 58 Showdown: The quest to eliminate stupid Roman numerals

Sports editor predicts a Kansas City Chiefs win to cement Swifties’ dynasty

This is the battle for the soul of America. What? You think it’s Super Bowl 58, the K.C. Swifties vs. the Santa Clara 49ers on Feb. 11 in the City of Endless Buffets? No way, José. It’s not right vs. left, crazy vs. insane, Jim Harbaugh vs. Iggy Pop, or even Jim “Cheater in Khakis” Harbaugh vs. Ron “It’s the […]

Super Bowl 58 Showdown: The quest to eliminate stupid Roman numerals

Snot Otter picks San Francisco 49ers in a debacle, seeks Superb Owl of Joan Miró

When I lived in Lincolnwood, Illinois, near Henry A. Proesel Park, I swear I saw Joe Montana in our family kitchen circa 1988. Is that Joe Cool? I stared intently at the mole on his neck. That’s him alright. I was convinced. So, Joe Montana’s hanging out in my kitchen. I mean, he did call his wife from a sideline […]
