Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Santa and the Easter Bunny

Why do people paint eggs for Easter? It’s easier than wallpaper.
EDITORIAL

By the end of the week, a most important period for Catholics will start. Call it the Easter Triduum, Holy Triduum or simply the Three Days, the 72 hours that begin the evening of Thursday, March 28 and end the evening of Easter Sunday trace for believers the final days of Jesus’ life, his death and resurrection. For others, as […]

An ally for all in the name of a good community

COMMENTARY

Carlene Saxton, who has been Moorpark’s community development director since 2021, recently competed for and accepted the position of assistant city manager for the City of Ventura. As I’ve been reflecting on Carlene’s accomplishments in Moorpark, I am truly taken aback by the impact she has had here. Carlene transformed the city’s Community Development Department by improving planning processes to […]

Don’t let your guard down because of rain

COMMENTARY

As we navigate through storms, floods and rainy weather, it might seem unusual to bring up wildfire preparedness. However, it’s precisely during these wet conditions that we need to be thinking ahead. Here’s a fun game of questions to play with your kids: • What happens to plants and vegetation when we get such heavy rain? They grow, and grow […]

Violent crime rears its ugly head

EDITORIAL

Food insecurity. Travel. K-pop concert attendance. The list of things returned to pre pandemic level is growing and, in Ventura County, there’s a dubious new entry: violent crimes. In his just-released report detailing crime statistics for 2023, Sheriff Jim Fryhoff details how crime in the unincorporated area and the five cities that pay his agency to enforce the law, “across […]

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Shelters don’t take ending dogs’ suffering lightly The well-intentioned editorial “Renters with pets find a friend in Sacramento” (March 2) to support pet owners being able to find rental housing, unfortunately, included misleading information about animal shelters in your attempt to highlight positive animal legislation. Yes, the courts found that some L.A. County shelters had denied requests from rescues for […]

Renters with pets find friend in Sacramento

EDITORIAL

Dogs deserve a home, not a life in a shelter. Thankfully, the courts have taken a major step in advancing this idea. Now it’s the legislature’s turn. At the beginning of the year, The Acorn told you about the California Supreme Court’s opinion finding Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control violated state law when it denied requests from bona-fide […]
