Moorpark College student tests positive for COVID-19Free Access

The first and only known case of COVID-19 in the Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) was reported at Moorpark College this weekend.

Chancellor Greg Gillespie announced the news to students and staff, stating that the student last attended classes on March 9 and has since received medical care in Los Angeles County.

“Students, faculty and classified professionals who may have been in close contact with the student have been notified,” Gillespie said.

The community college, though, does not believe that others on campus were exposed to the virus. The incubation period for coronavirus is approximately 14 days and no students or staff has reported symptoms to their health providers, instructors or supervisors.

“We recognize this news will understandably cause concern,” Gillespie said. “We have prepared for COVID-19 and will continue to do everything possible to minimize its impact in our community.”

The community college district is continuing to transition its classes online this week in order to protect the health and safety of its campus communities in Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura.

The online program will continue through the semester and through the summer term.

“An effort like this has been colossal and could have only happened by the dedication and deep commitment to each other and our community. This is at the heart of who we are,” VCCD Board of Trustees Chair Bernardo Perez said.
