Have a cold one

The Moorpark Morning Rotary

Club and Enegren Brewing Company will host the eighth annual Moorpark Beer Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Sun., Oct. 1 on High Street and surrounding properties in historic downtown Moorpark.

The last pour will be at 4 p.m.

This event is a celebration of local craft beer and will feature local breweries, food trucks and vendors.

The funds raised from the event benefit city schools and nonprofit organizations serving the Moorpark community.

Tickets are $50 for early birds, $60 after. The cost includes entrance to the event and beer sampling for the entire afternoon.

Tickets for non-drinkers are $25.

‘Batman’ at night

The Moorpark Recreation Division’s

Movies in the Park series will screen “The Lego Batman Movie” on Sat., Aug. 19 at Arroyo Vista Community Park, 4550 Tierra Rejada Road, Moorpark.

Free pre-show activities will take place from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m., including bounce houses, a photo booth, superhero martial arts training with “stranger danger” safety tips and a special appearance by Batman.

The movie will start at 8:15 p.m.

Free movie-time goodies will be provided. Fresh kettle corn and cold sodas will be available for purchase. Admission is free.

Get ready for Senior Games

Seniors age 55 and older can participate in the 2017 Moorpark Senior Games. Applications are being accepted.

The games begin with an opening ceremony Fri., Sept. 8. The games will run Sept. 11 through Oct. 6 and are expected to draw participants from Moorpark and surrounding communities.

The 15 sports events are: basketball key shots, bingo, bocce ball, bowling, darts, golf, horseshoes, mahjong, pickle ball, pinochle, poker, poker walk, table tennis, tennis and Wii bowling.

The Senior Games closing ceremony will be Fri., Oct. 6. Lunch will be served and medals will be distributed.

To participate, entry applications must be received by Aug. 30. Applications are available at the Moorpark Active Adult Center, 799 Moorpark Ave.

Memoir contest open for writers

The Ventura County Writers Club is accepting entries for its annual 2017 Memoir Contest through midnight Aug. 15.

“We are hoping that writers of all levels will submit their personal stories,” said contest chairwoman Shelba Cole-Robison. “It’s a great opportunity to write down those memories that you’ve always wanted to turn into a personal or family history.”

Contest winners receive cash prizes: $150 for first place, $75 for second place and $30 for third place. Winning stories will also be included in the club’s biannual hardbound anthology.

Entry fees are $10 for VCWC members and $15 for nonmembers. Story length is up to 1,250 words.

Truckin’ to museum for grateful concert

As part of the 50th anniversary Summer of Love Celebration, the Museum of Ventura County will host a performance by Grateful Dead tribute band Cubensis from 6 to 8 p.m. Sat., Aug. 26 at the museum, 100 Main St., Ventura.

Cubensis re-creates the era’s unique and eclectic styles of rock, psychedelia and experimental music.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Admission is $10. A no-host bar will be available.
