Share The Road Ride supports safe cycling
Soaring Spirits International will host the fourth annual Share the Road Ride at 7 a.m. Sat., Oct. 5 from the DMV parking lot at 3855 Alamo St., Simi Valley.
This ride is dedicated in memory of cyclist Phil Hernandez, who was killed while riding his bicycle in 2005. The event is to remind motorists to share the road with cyclists. There will be an official send-off by Simi Valley Mayor Bob Huber.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2011 had 677 bicycle/ motor vehicle crashes resulting in death. That number reflects a 9 percent increase over the previous year, and accounted for 2 percent of all traffic deaths for 2011.
The ride will have three different riding categories for cyclists: the 100-mile century ride, a 50-mile half-century ride and the 25-mile City Tour.
Along the bike path, specific miles of the ride will be dedicated to cyclists who have lost their lives in cycling accidents.
Cyclists can pre-register at www.sharetheroadridesv.com or sign up on race day. The regis- tration fee in advance is $50 for individuals and $60 for tandem. On race day, the fee will be $60 for individuals and $70 for tandems. No refunds will be given for registration. The ride will take place held rain or shine.
