A former Moorpark High standout has helped the University of Massachusetts Boston women’s volleyball team enjoy its best start in 10 years.

Freshman middle blocker Shannon Thompson of Moorpark notched 10 kills to lead the Beacons to a 25-14, 25-9, 25-9 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Sept. 17.

UMass Boston improved to 92 this season after the victory for its fastest start since 1999, when the school won 10 of its first 11 games.

Thompson was named Little East Conference Volleyball Rookie of the Week during her first week of action from Aug. 31Sept. 6.
