Longtime family doctor retires because of illness

Dr. George Carbone Dr. George Carbone Dr. George P. Carbone, who has been a practicing family physician in Simi Valley for 25 years, is unexpectedly retiring because of a rare genetic disorder.

Carbone, 56, a member of the Alamo Hills Medical Group, has chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction, an inherited condition that affects the gastro-intestinal and urinary tracts.

It is unknown how many people suffer from the condition, but according to Brian Lacy, PhD, MD, associate professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School’s Gastrointestinal Motility Lab, approximately 100 infants per year are born with the condition.

Chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction was first described in 1958 when Carbone’s cousins in New York were some of the earliest reported cases.

Over three generations, various relatives exhibited different symptoms of poor health. Carbone’s son became ill several years ago. After interviewing his cousins in New York, Carbone realized that both he and his son suffered from the same condition.

Following an 11day hospitalization at Simi Valley Hospital, Carbone is recuperating from a small bowel obstruction and aspiration pneumonia.

Carbone will turn over his practice to Dr. Bryan Davidson, who recently joined Alamo Hills Medical Group. Carbone will spend three months helping his patients with the transition to the new physician, and all patient records will remain in the office.

After the threemonth transition period, Carbone will do some research and writing.

Davidson completed his training in family practice at Glendale Adventist Hospital after graduation from Loma Linda Medical School. He can be reached by calling (805) 5276424 or at his office at Alamo Hills Medical Group, 2876 Sycamore Drive, Simi Valley.
