Drivers still not putting down those cellphones
      Now that the fear of getting caught breaking a new law has subsided, local authorities say they’re handing out more tickets than ever to motorists violating the state’s ban on talking or texting on a cellphone while driving.

CHP’s 80th birthday coming up
      The California Highway Patrol will celebrate its 80th anniversary on Fri., Aug. 14 with an open house from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Moorpark CHP office in the Moorpark Police Services facility on Spring Street. The festivities will include vintage and new CHP patrol vehicles, office tours, child seat inspections and installations, and recruitment information.

Family pet is training as a lifesaver
      When Annette Markowitz rescued Collin, a male terrier mix, four years ago, she had a good feeling she’d found a companion for life. What she didn’t know is she’d found a potential lifesaver as well. “We’ve been incredibly, incredibly lucky,” Markowitz said. “He’s an absolute gift.”

Class will help homeowners wise up with water
      The city of Moorpark is offering, as part of its summer recreation program, a waterwise gardening class, which will offer ways residents can conserve water and reduce their water bills, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sat., Aug. 15 at the Arroyo Vista Recreation Center, 4550 Tierra Rejada Road, Moorpark.
