Official grand opening for new farmers market is this weekend

The Ventura County Certified Farmers' Market Association will open a new farmers market at Moorpark College, an activity sponsored by the Moorpark College Foundation.

The market will officially open from 8 a.m. to noon Sat., June 20 on the east side of the campus in parking lot G1 at Campus Park Drive. The market will be opened every Saturday afterwards.

The grand opening celebration will include musical entertainment and activities.

Approximately 25 certified

farmers and also food vendors will participate in the new market, offering fresh produce, honey, eggs, fresh-cut flowers and potted plants.

The Moorpark College Foundation will provide weekly family activities and giveaways at the market.

The Ventura County Junior Master Gardener project will be on hand in June to provide activities for children. Shoppers will be able to obtain a full list of monthly activities at the market.

The Ventura County Certified Farmers' Market Association began in 1985. The Moorpark site joins the other markets: two in Ventura, one in Thousand Oaks and one in Santa Clarita.

All markets are open yearround, rain or shine, except for Thousand Oaks, which is closed during the Christmas holiday season.

To participate in the association, all farmers must raise, catch, gather, grow or otherwise produce the product they sell. Growers of all agricultural items are certified by their county agricultural commissioner by an on-site inspection and specific market permits.
