Drive carefully around bicyclers
Thuthunk. Thuthunk. Thuthunk. Wooooooosh. The sounds in writing look much less scary then they are, that wooosh being the sound of a truck's passenger side mirror whizzing by my head with just a few inches to spare.
You see, I ride my bike. A lot. I try and commute from Spring Road to Moorpark College whenever weather permits. The sounds I'm describing are cars that pass me as I travel on the narrow Princeton Avenue.
In this time of economic hardship I think it's great that we have a community that supports parks and recreation. I was elated to find out that Moorpark was building a new skate park. And yet I was left wondering why there was no update or planned improvements for the city's bicycle paths and lanes, or lack thereof.
Now I understand how hard it is to widen Princeton Avenue. But why are these two large chunks of Moorpark not linked by a bike path, something going along the Arroyo, for example.
Meanwhile, I would like to make a request to drivers. I know that it's not illegal to put on makeup, talk on your Bluetooth headset, sip your mocha java and yell at your kids in the backseat—all performed at the same time while driving your oversized gas guzzling SUV, of course—but please give bicyclists a chance.
Share the road. Recognize that there are those of us who not only bicycle for the enjoyment but actually use that mode of transportation to get from point A to point B on a daily basis. Slow down, move over, and play nice with other users on the road. Brent Bain Moorpark
