He received a bachelor's degree in business from Pepperdine University in 1968, after which he was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War. He served four years, during which time he rose in rank to 1st Lieutenant. After the army, he was a police officer for LAPD for six years.

Young has lived in Oak Park for 33 years with his wife, Maureen, of 40 years. They have three children and eight grandchildren.
