Car part thefts on the rise
Thieves have been stealing catalytic converters from vehicles parked in Moorpark and Simi Valley in recent weeks.
The culprits generally go after trucks and SUVs because those vehicles have high ground clearance, which allows easier access to the exhaust system, authorities said. But similar thefts from cars shouldn't be ruled out.
Catalytic converters contain valuable metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium. Investigations in Moorpark show that wrongdoers may be reselling the converters as new, said Senior Dep. Robert Berger.
The thieves make about $50 to $100 per unit, while victims pay between $1,000 and $5,000 in replacement costs.
To deter thefts, residents should install audible car alarms or use motion-sensitive spotlights in driveways and those who have a garage should park inside it, police said.
Anyone with information about the recent thefts should call Moorpark detectives at (805) 532-2700 or Ventura Sheriff's Dispatch at (805) 654-9511.
