Man charged with violating copyrights

Suspect accused of posting new movies on Internet

While Hollywood was honoring top movies at the Academy Awards show on Sunday, a 21-year-old Moorpark man probably was not celebrating two recently released films he was accused of pirating.

A federal grand jury last week named Derek Hawthorne in atwo-count indictment that charges him with uploading "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Australia" to websites where visitors can download the movies to their own computers.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of three years in federal prison and a fine of at least $250,000.

Hawthorne was expected to surrender to federal authorities this week, according to a Department of Justice press release issued a week ago.

He is one of three Southern California men recently charged in separate cases for distributing pirated copies of Hollywood movies online.

The other two men charged were Owen Moody, 24, of San Marcos, who allegedly uploaded a copy of "Slumdog Millionaire" late last year, and Jack Yates, 28, of Porter Ranch for allegedly posting of a prerelease copy of the "The Love Guru."
