Moorpark resident Marcelino Lopez Garcia, 62, died in a car collision at the intersection of Las Posas and Lewis roads in Camarillo at about 8:30 p.m., Fri., Jan. 30.

Garcia was headed east in a Honda Civic on Las Posas Road when he entered the intersection directly in front of a Dodge Ram truck driven by Ruben Espinoza, 65, also a Moorpark resident, who was traveling north on Lewis Road.

The truck hit the car broadside. Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported by ambulance to Saint John's Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo. Garcia was pronounced dead at 8:47 p.m. and Espinoza was treated for moderate injuries before being released.

"For unknown reasons the victim went through the red light and he received fatal internal injuries," said Sgt. Harold Hanley of the Camarillo Police.

Garcia, who worked in Camarillo, was on his way home.

Early reports indicate the accident was not caused by speeding or alcohol use, said Hanley. Results of an autopsy conducted Saturday were not available at press time. Certain drug tests can take months to process, the coroner's office stated.

The investigation of the cause of the accident is ongoing.

The intersection of Las Posas and Lewis roads was closed for close to five hours following the crash.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident but who has not yet come forward to contact the Camarillo Police Department's Traffic Bureau at (805) 388-5146.

According to Maria Garza, Garcia's goddaughter, he leaves behind four grown sons and a sister who lives in Moorpark.
