Moorpark Rotary Relays track meet today at MHS

The ninth annual Moorpark Rotary Relays will take place this afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. at Moorpark High.

Boys and girls from Mesa Verde and Chaparral middle schools in Moorpark will compete in a variety of track and field events.

Event organizer Deonna Armijo, a physical education teacher at Mesa Verde, said the free meet typically draws 200300 students.

"One of the things I've always liked about track is that there's something for everybody," Armijo said.

"The bigger, slower kid could be great at throwing, and the fast, quick kid that isn't very strong might be great at running. You don't have to be good at everything. It's all about doing your personal best."

The Rotary Club of Moorpark donates money that is used to purchase T-shirts for the participants, Armijo said.

Students from Moorpark High will serve as meet volunteers, helping log times and getting the youngsters ready for their events.

"We keep records of all the events, and that really seems to give the kids something to strive for," Armijo said.
