Collision brings down power lines

Hwy. 118 west of Moorpark was closed in both directions for about six hours Monday morning due to downed power lines caused by a vehicle collision.

Fortino Guerrero, 47, of Oxnard, was driving a 1999 Mercury eastbound on Hwy. 118 east of Hitch Boulevard at an unknown rate of speed through a moderate curve in the road at about 5:37 a.m. Antonio Guevara, 48, of Lakeside, Calif., was driving a 1995 Freightliner tractor truck westbound at about 35 mph. The weather at the time was cloudy with light rain and the road was wet.

Guerrero was unable to maintain control of his car, due to his unsafe speed for the conditions. The Mercury drifted across the double yellow center lines into the westbound traffic lane and collided head-on with the truck. The Freighliner veered onto the north shoulder where it hit a power pole, resulting in downed power lines across the road.

Guerrero was transported to Los Robles Hopsital in Thousand Oaks with a broken right foot and major internal injuries.

Guevara was taken to Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo with a complaint of pain to his lower back and right side.

The collision is under investigation by the Moorpark Area CHP.
