For more information, visit www.moorparklibrary.org. •An exhibit of wall pockets, the collection of Youth Services librarian Melissa Elliott, is on display at the library. Wall pockets- also known as wall vases- have been a popular home décor item since Victorian times. Their heyday in America corresponded to a surge of new potteries established shortly after the turn of the 20th century. . World War II had a big impact on the development of American potteries. The war in Europe disrupted ceramics production overseas, and the war with Japan banned imports from that country, providing a protected economic environment in which American craftspeople could flourish. When the war was over, however, Japan's industry flooded America with inexpensive ceramics, contributing to the demise of many of the handdecorated pottery producers. Elliott's collection of 25 wall pockets features a representative sampling produced by such American potteries as Roseville, Weller, Hull, McCoy, and Shawnee, as well as some unusual examples of Japan's contribution. The exhibit will be up through Jan. 24. For details, call Elliott at (805) 517-6374, or email melliott@moorparklibrary.org. |
