Acorn File Photo DOUBLE-DOUBLE- Moorpark High's Lauren Carter averaged 17 points and 11.6 rebounds per game during her senior season. Over the past nine months the Acorn has had the privilege of watching many athletes at Moorpark High.

It's a pleasure to watch not only the best players perform but also the others that may never play again after high school.

Here's our list of the top athletes at MHS during the past school year for each sport.

Picking some of the award winners in some sports was easy, while others were debatable.

Now, let the coronation begin:

FALL SEASON

Football: Casey Blum

This choice was tough because quarterback Adam Barry also had a stellar year for the Musketeers. Blum, however, gets the nod here as the Tulane-bound defensive lineman was named the Marmonte League's Lineman of the Year.

Boys' water polo: Greg Beattie

Beattie is the pick, beating out senior teammate Tyler Johnson. Beattie, like Johnson, was a firstteam AllMarmonte League selection. Beattie, however, was also a thirdteam AllCIFSouthern Section Division I team choice. Beattie had 73 goals and 71 steals during his senior year.

Cross country: Chris Coleman

Coleman was the Musketeers' top runner all year and was rewarded for his fast times when he was named to the All-Marmonte League second team.

Girls' volleyball:

Rachael Kidder

Although Moorpark had a disappointing season, the junior continued to put up stellar numbers.

Kidder, who will attend UCLA after her senior year, led the team with 3.7 kills per game and was second on the team in digs (197) and blocks (48).

With Kidder and teammate Shannon Thompson back next season, Moorpark will be contenders in the Marmonte League.

Girls' tennis: Kim Kolibas

Kolibas earns the top spot after leading the Musketeers as the team's No. 1 singles player.

"She is a great sportswoman, and she did a great job of moving the ball around the court this past year," interim head coach David McManara said.

WINTER SEASON

Boys' basketball:

David Buchanan

Although Moorpark missed out on the postseason, Buchanan was solid on the court, averaging 18.8 points per game, the third-highest total in the Marmonte League. The senior also led the Musketeers with 1.9 steals per game.

Girls' basketball:

Lauren Carter

The decision on naming the best MHS girls' basketball player was a tough one, considering Moorpark also had senior stars such as Molly Carson and Megan Natelson. But, in the end, leaving Carter off this list would've been a crime.

In her senior year, Carter averaged a double-double- 17 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. She was also second on the team in blocked shots (26) and steals (45).

Boys' soccer: Mike Tapia

The boys' soccer team struggled, but senior Mike Tapia was one of the squad's top scoring threats. In an Acorn article earlier this year, head coach Juan Barron had many nice things to say about Tapia.

"Tapia definitely wants to win every game," Barron said. "He's a very offensive-minded player. The other day he hit a 30-foot shot for a goal."

Girls' soccer: Kaitlin Paletta

Paletta played the majority of the season hurt but still found a way to earn the Marmonte League's Player of the Year award.

Paletta, who's headed for UC Berkeley, played especially well in the postseason, where the Musketeers lost in the CIF-Southern Section Division II championship game to Thousand Oaks. It was the program's first appearance in a CIF title game.

Girls' water polo:

Kacie Markado

This decision was extremely tough because seniors Morgan Baker and Caitlyn Johnson also played very well. In the end, though, Markado is the pick here because of her offense.

Markado was a firstteam AllMarmonte League selection and scored 43 goals.

"Kacie was a very strong offensive player for us this past year," head coach Jason Nevis said. "Her turn was amazing, and she was able to play well for us as a whole-set."

Wrestling: Kyle Nance

Nance gets the nod after becoming the only Musketeer to win an individual title at the Marmonte League duals meet in February.

Nance won in the 127-pound division, defeating Thousand Oaks' Ben Comfort in front of his hometown MHS crowd.

SPRING SEASON

Baseball: Dewey Grattan

For starters, his name is Dewey Grattan, possibly the best baseball name ever.

Although he could've won this award on his name alone, Grattan did put up stellar numbers during his senior year.

Grattan came a point away from winning the Musketeers' Triple Crown as he batted .426 with a team-leading six home runs and 35 RBI. He was rewarded for his performance by being named to the AllMarmonte League second team.

Softball: Taylor Neumann

Neumann batted .320 in her 14 league games this season and once again established herself as one of the best catchers in Ventura County. This decision was also tough since, like Neumann, teammate Tori Flores was named to the All-Marmonte League first team.

Boys' volleyball: Joey Koressel

Moorpark's boys' volleyball team didn't have a stellar year, but one positive was the play of junior Joey Koressel. No Moorpark players, however, were named to the All-Marmonte League teams.

Track and field: Max Dyce

Dyce was probably an easier pick than any other athlete in any other sport.

He recently competed in the 100-meter dash at the state meet, finishing fifth. The 100 isn't his only event, as Dyce qualified for the Masters meet in the 200 and the long jump.

Dyce didn't become a sprinter until this year when Moorpark sprint coach Gus Guardino encouraged him to take on the challenge.

"I asked (Dyce) if he wanted to compete in the sprint events, and he actually told me no at first," Guardino said in an earlier Acorn article. "I told him he didn't have a choice anymore- he was going to be too good."

Swimming: Michael Lorch

Lorch came back from a football injury his freshman year to become one of the school's finest swimmers.

In his senior season, Lorch was the Marmonte League champion in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle.

"He's been a great swimmer for us," said head coach Jason Nevis in an earlier article. "He's very intelligent and quick-witted. He's a leader on this team, even if he's a quiet-type and not as vocal."

Golf: Brent Duclos

Duclos was Moorpark's best golfer all year and was rewarded for his play when he made the AllMarmonte League second team.

Boys' tennis: Evan Sandlin

Sandlin was the Musketeers top singles player this season. He was recently named to the AllMarmonte League second team for singles players.
