Active Adult Programs

The Moorpark Active Adult Center presents the following activities for seniors this month.

Events require a reservation and will meet at 799 Moorpark Ave. unless otherwise noted. Programs are free unless a donation or cost is requested.

•Joyce Barnett gives a free cooking demonstration at 2 p.m. Tues., Jan. 8. Barnett will show how to make homemade chicken and noodles, dumplings and applesauce. Food will be eaten after cooking.

•An AARP Mature Driver class will be offered from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tues. and Wed., Jan. 8 and 9 in the Citrus Room in city hall, adjacent to the Active Adult Center. This class is for those who have not taken the class before.

Qualified course graduates age 50 and up can qualify for a discount on auto insurance premiums. Students must attend both days to receive a class certificate. Cost is $10.

•Free carotid artery testing will be offered to Ventura County residents age 60 and up by appointment only on Fri., Jan. 11. Space is limited and reservations will not be taken from voice mail. This free service is made possible by a grant from Ventura County Area Agency on Aging and is part of a countywide "Strike Out Stroke" program.

•A DVD lecture series on "A History of England from the Tudors to the Stuarts" will take place on the second Thursday of the month starting at 12:45 p.m. Jan. 10.

The first meeting covers "England 1485-1714, the First Modern Country" and "The Land and Its People in 1485, Part I." Speakers on the DVDs include Professor Robert Bucholz of Loyola University in Chicago and Professor Dale Hoak of the College of William and Mary.

•Global warming will be discussed through a DVD lecture series on the fourth Monday of the month beginning 12:45 p.m. Jan. 28.

The lecturer on the DVD is Professor Richard Wolfson of Middlebury College, who discusses scientific issues related to the matter. The first meeting covers "Is Earth Warming?" and "Butterflies, Glaciers and Hurricanes."
