Hospital staff gets in shape

Simi Valley Hospital recently received recognition from the American Heart Association as a "Fit Friendly Company," receiving a 2007 Gold Level Start Accreditation for its newly developed Walk This Weigh employee fitness program.

"The Walk This Weigh employee fitness program was the main thrust behind our receiving this award," said Jeremy Brewer, director of marketing and communication. "Today we have more than 60 hospital employees walking on a regular basis. We are totally committed to helping our employees achieve their wellness goals."

The hospital is one of only three companies in the association's southwestern affiliate- California, Utah and Nevada- to receive this distinction during the current recognition period. The award takes into consideration several factors in creating a heartconscious workforce, including initiatives that encourage employees to exercise.

The Walk This Weigh program promotes employee wellness through walking and smart diet choices. The hospital provides various incentives to employees for exercising to further motivate wellness.

Studies indicate that a healthy workforce has lower health costs, is more motivated, demonstrates greater productivity and is less likely to call in sick.
