Seniors can save money on monthly bills

It's called the "golden years" for the number of years lived and enjoyed, but in California, this could be a golden opportunity for saving money.

With housing prices, utility bills and other expenses reaching alltime highs, it could pay to take advantage of some existing programs that can help seniors save. Seniors need to sign up for these programs.

Seniors can take advantage of subsidized housing, commonly known as Section 8, through the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Seniors won't have to go far away from family or community of preference because they can choose any city in the state. The online HUD database can search by ZIP code or city where subsidized housing is available at www.hud.gov, or call or visit the local HUD office listed on the website or in the phone book.

Seniors may be able to reduce monthly utility bills by reviewing the annual income guidelines for CARE and LifeLine, two moneysaving programs administered by the California Public Utilities Commission.

The CARE program can help save up to 20 percent a month on gas and electric bills. Call the customer service number of the local gas or electric company listed on the monthly statement. It's simple and confidential to sign up.

Another way to help reduce costs is to enroll in the California Lifeline telephone program, which provides local home telephone service for as little as $6 a month, plus taxes and surcharge. There's no need to get a new number or change the current phone service provider. Enroll by calling (866) 272-0349 or online at www.californialifeline.com.

Seniors may also want to take advantage of Medicare's Part D which provides beneficiaries with assistance in paying for prescription drugs. To assess eligibility, call (800) MEDICARE (6334227) or visit www.medicare.gov.

For those who need extra help in paying for a plan due to limited income, apply online by visiting the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan section on the Social Security Administration website, www.socialsecurity.gov/prescription help, or call Social Security at (800) 722-1213.

The golden years are for creating golden memories and enjoying loved ones, not for worrying about bills. Take advantage of money-saving programs so as to put worries to rest.
