Simi seniors cool down In response to a recent heat advisory issued by the state, the city has designated Simi Valley Senior Center a cooling center for seniors and any atrisk individuals during periodic heat waves. The center, at 3900 Avenida Simi, will be open to the public on an as-needed basis to provide an air-conditioned resting place for those who may be suffering from extreme heat conditions. "Heat emergencies are very serious and there are members in our community that may need the services to get out of the high temperatures," said Mark Oiler, the city's deputy director of citizen services. Last weekend, as temperatures climbed over 100 degrees for the first time this summer, the senior center served 22 people over a four-day period beginning Thursday. The cooling center offers drinking water, room for relaxation and passive activities like playing cards, puzzles and television, Oiler said. When the cooling center is open to the public as dictated by weather conditions, hours will be weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Seniors are encouraged to call the center at (805) 583-6363 for further information or keep watch on the city's website (www.simivalley.org) for updates. |
