Summer program imparts Bible message through fun Children between the ages of 4 and 11 are invited to go on a godly adventure at the Cornerstone Community Church's Vacation Bible School in Moorpark. The Western-themed summer camp will take place at Moorpark High School from 9 a.m. to noon June 18 to 22. Cost is $35 per child. "The purpose of the program is to spread the love of God into our community and to provide kids with an opportunity to have a lot of fun for very little cost," said Aimee DesLauriers, children's ministry director at the church for the past five years. Prior to her current position, DesLauriers was a Sunday school teacher at the church for several years. "I love working with children, and I feel very blessed to do this ministry," she said. The church truly feels like a family, and that spirit carries over into programs like Vacation Bible School. Children who attend the fiveday camp will begin the day with a group meeting and upbeat songs. Then they'll break into "crews" led by volunteers carefully screened by church staff. Participants will journey into one of four areas, which include a themed craft, games, the Bible and the adventures of Chadder- a chipmunk who's always getting into trouble- with a point that reinforces the theme for the day. Each area has been in preparation for months in advance, with a lot of heart and soul put into it, said DesLauriers. The day will end with a visit from one of Cornerstone's pastors. "The kids will also be given a daily challenge to show what they've learned, whether that be to obey their parents or help a friend," DesLauriers said. The summer program began three years ago and has grown to serve about 150 children. "We definitely put on a quality program, and I know it's the highlight of my year," DesLauriers said. Sign-ups will close on Sun., June 3. Contact the church office Monday to Friday at (805) 5539929, ext. 12, for more information. The church will host a picnic on Sun., June 24 to celebrate the end of the week's activities. |
