Students produce film on internment camp survivors

A documentary film created by 13 Moorpark High School students, "A Test of Strength," will be screened at 7 p.m. Tues., May 29 at the Moorpark United Methodist Church, 261 Flory Ave.

The public is invited and there is no charge. The student producers/directors will be present to discuss the film, and refreshments will be served.

The movie portrays interviews with local Japanese Americans who were relocated to internment camps during World War II, along with rare historic footage and photographs.

Filmmaker Kevin Sitek, a senior at Moorpark High, said, "This project has been a great experience for all of us. We have been able to learn about scriptwriting and filmmaking as a team, but we've also found incredible stories about individuals and groups who persevered through a very difficult period of our nation's history."

The project was funded through CalServe Service Training, the Moorpark Unified School District and by the students themselves. Amy Akashi, an enrichment teacher, facilitated the project.

For more information, call Akashi at (805) 378-6306.
