Recycling event a success

Recently members of the American Legion in Moorpark sponsored an e-waste recycling event. For two days, the community turned in old electronic equipment- computers, televisions, monitors, cellphones, laptops, anything with an electronic circuit. Because of environmental concerns it is no longer sensible or legal to simply throw these items into the trash.

Veterans in Moorpark wanted to do their part for the environment. It was in that spirit that Legion Commander Bruce Thomas set about the task of aligning the community to take part. Under his guidance and leadership, he asked for and received the help of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 604, the Moorpark Unified School District, the Boys and Girls Club, the city of Moorpark, teachers and students from the high school and convinced the Moorpark Acorn newspaper that it should not be left out of this worthwhile endeavor.

By the end of the two-day event, hundreds of pieces of electronic equipment and thousands of pounds of e-waste were collected.

As one of the volunteers that participated in this effort, I would like nothing more than to take all of the credit for its success. But I cannot. If it were not for each of those mentioned, this would not have been possible.

As a veteran, I am honored to have played a very small part in what was accomplished and wish to acknowledge all of those who helped to make it happen with a big "thank you." The city is a little cleaner, and the landfill is a little safer.

Post 502 already is planning to do it again in October of this year. Jim Carpenter Moorpark Post 502
