Simi Valley Hospital renovates, expands emergency services

A multiple-phase Emergency Department renovation and expansion project currently underway at Simi Valley Hospital will reduce patient wait times, enhance ability to provide emergency care during a major disaster, provide muchneeded physical space, and create colorful treatment rooms for patients and guests.

"The expansion represents the first of a multiphase initiative aimed at expanding and updating the ED, enhancing emergency care and ultimately constructing a completely new Emergency Department," said Gary Irish, hospital president and CEO. "Simi Valley Hospital is responding to more than a decade of tremendous population growth."

Estimated at approximately at $250,000, phase one involves renovation of 5,600 square feet in the guest lobby and patient care areas. Improvements include new cabinetry, carpeting, floor tile and lobby furniture. The colors for the ED will match the design of the new Patient Care Tower. Construction activities began in January and are scheduled to be completed prior to summer.

Phase two will help address the unit's growing patient volumes with the installation of a new dedicated fast track system, which will provide care for less severe illnesses and injuries, such as sore throats, fevers, sprains, ear infections, upper respiratory problems, and minor cuts and abrasions. Phase two will begin upon approval from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, a state agency that oversees construction and renovation of healthcare facilities in California.

"Our current patient volume in the Emergency Department is 50 percent more than what the Emergency Department was originally designed for," said Julie Shores, director of emergency services. "The second phase of construction will help us improve service and wait times."

"With the construction of the Patient Care Tower, the Emergency Department entrance is literally the front door of our hospital, and it makes a lasting impression," said Irish. "Our goal is to make a visit to the Emergency Department as comfortable as possible for our patients and guests."
