Professor to exhibit sewn art at Moorpark College Gallery

Moorpark College art professor Cynthia Minet will present a solo exhibition of her new works from March 12 through April 18 in the Administration Building Gallery, 7075 Campus Road, Moorpark.

An artist reception will be hosted from 6 to 8 p.m. Thurs., March 15.

The display will feature sculptures and sewn drawings that the artist has created in the past year and a half. Minet is known for her sewn sculptures that combine vinyl, fabrics and hardware into works that comment on the impact of synthetic substances in the environment, whether through fashion, technology or consumer goods.

The exhibition will include artworks completed during a residency at Kaus Australis in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in July 2005; a sculpture shown at the Archaeological Museum in Amelia, Italy, in June 2006; and a new large mobile first presented at the Ruby Green Art Center in Nashville, Tenn., in November 2006.

Los Angeles Times critic Holly Myers said, "Minet's are fascinating objects (that) gain much of their potency from a shrewd economy of means . . . The political undertone of the work is subtle but suggestive, encouraging viewers to consider the more sinister side of fashion and to explore the ramifications of our consumer appetites."

Minet's work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and abroad. International group shows include the Biennale di Arte Tessile in Amelia, Italy; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Minsk, Belarus; and in several venues in Israel, including The New Gallery at the Teddy Stadium, Jerusalem; the Projective Artist's Museum, Tel Aviv; and Limbos Gallery, Tel Aviv.

Minet received her Master of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University and her bachelor's degree from UC Santa Barbara. Her work is represented by SolwayJones, Los Angeles.

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
