Musketeers can't match Thousand Oaks' intensity
By Thomas Gase tgase@theacorn.com

JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers TOUGH DAY- Moorpark's Haley Swenson, left, tries to pass over Thousand Oaks' Cheyenne Conaway on Wednesday afternoon.
Moorpark High's girls' water polo team failed to gain ground in the Marmonte League standings on Wednesday when it lost to Thousand Oaks 15-6.

The defeat dropped the Musketeers' record to 1-3 in league play.

During the game, Moorpark had trouble containing Thousand Oaks' fast break, as the Lancers constantly beat MHS down the pool.

Whitney Delgado got things going for the Lancers early as she scored on a power play to put TOHS up 1-0 with 5:56 left in the first quarter. Delgado didn't let up in the second quarter either, as she scored two goals within a minute of each other, with the second coming with 3:51 remaining in the first half to put TOHS up 6-0.

Moorpark would not go quietly, though, and the Musketeers put up two goals before the half ended to get within four. Stacie London scored a goal with 2:41 left in the half and Kacie Markado added another score 44 seconds later.

Although Markado would score another goal with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter to put the game at 10-5, it was as close as Moorpark got. Kristina D'Itri would add her second goal and Delgado would score her gamehigh fifth goal to put the game out of reach.

Although Moorpark lost by nine, the game could have been closer as many Musketeer shots hit the goal post.

"We are still working on shot placement in practice," Moorpark head coach Rodney Nash said. "I am teaching them to shoot low instead of the traditional way of teaching kids to shoot high. If some of the shots would have been a little lower they might have gone in today."

Nash said the team needs to work on matching the desire of its opponents.

"I repeated after the game the points I kept telling them during the game," Nash said. "We have to want to win the game and every battle as much as Thousand Oaks did today. This game wasn't about fundamentals, it was about attitude."
