Moorpark’s Scott named Ventura County Player of the Year

The Ventura County Football Coaches Association all-county teams have been announced.

In the large school division, Moorpark High’s Darrell Scott has been named Offensive Player of the Year. Scott, who rushed for 3,194 yards and scored 46 touchdowns, helped lead the Musketeers to the CIFSS Northern Division championship game.

Scott’s rushing total was the 11th highest in state history, according to CalHiSports.com.

Newbury Park High’s Anthony Leonardi was named coReceiver of the Year. Ten of Leonardi’s 61 receptions went for touchdowns this season.

Dejuan Yates of Thousand Oaks High won the award for Offensive Lineman of the Year. Behind Yates, the Lancers amassed more than 1,800 rushing yards.

Rounding out the first-team offense are quarterbacks Ryan Campbell of Westlake and Thousand Oaks’ Ryan Cloney, as well as wide receivers Taylor Malm of Thousand Oaks and Westlake’s Michael Streck-Woodard.

David Ruelas of Westlake, along with Moorpark’s Pat Carter and George Halamandaris, were all named to the firstteam offensive line.

Newbury Park junior quarterback Colby Cameron leads the list of locals to crack the second-team offense. Cameron is joined by a pair of running backs—Agoura High’s Matt Bradley and Royal High’s Marcus Hunt—and Westlake place kicker Jordan Mannisto. Agoura’s Scott Beth and

Newbury Park’s Tim Ketaily were each named to the second-team offensive line.

On the opposite side of the ball, Newbury Park’s Mike Ferrari was honored as the county’s Defensive Lineman of the Year. In 10 games, Ferrari recorded 69 tackles, 4.5 sacks and recovered three fumbles.

Moorpark and Westlake each had three players named to the first-team defense.

Dakota Holland, Nick Sarrocco and Tyler Smith represent the Musketeers’ defense, while Justin Lilley, Chase Calderon and Tyrone Duncan of Westlake were honored as well.

The second-team defense was chalk full of Chargers. Agoura’s Josh Irvin, Eric Wells and Adam Fish all were honored by the coaches. Also making the second team were Royal’s Jared Debo, Jordan Calloway and Dan Jennings, as well as Westlake’s Pat Barraza.

Westlake was honored as the Varsity Coaching Staff of the Year.

WHS head coach Jim Benkert’s staff members are: Mike Leiben, Eric Shackelford, Steve Hary, Richard Fong, Chad Spears, Darryl Smith, Ron Rescigno, Bill Culpepper and John Compton.

Thousand Oaks took home the award for Junior Varsity Coaching Staff of the Year. The Lancers were led by head coach Eric Schnieder and assistants Jason Opsal, Tony Calfo and Keelan Woodruff.

Gil Mendoza of Newbury Park was honored as a Walk-On Coach of the Year.

In the small schools division, Oaks Christian swept nearly every major award.

Quarterback Jimmy Clausen and running back Marc Tyler shared a tri-Offensive Player of the Year award. Wide receiver Sean Wiser was a co-Receiver of the Year and Cory Yriarty was a co-Lineman of the Year.

Oak Park High quarterback Darren McGee, running back Kyle Benton, tight end Steven Filie and offensive lineman Dustin Geyer all made the first-team offense.

Oaks Christian was represented by wide receiver Chris Potter, and offensive linemen Michael Ebbitt and Ryan McDaniel. Grace Brethren wideout Travis Sproat also was named to the first-team offense.

Marshall Jones and Anthony Gildon of Oaks Christian and Oak Park’s Logan Ketchum were honored as tri-Defensive Backs of the Year.

Oak Park’s Sean Westgate and OCHS’ Casey Matthews were named co-Linebackers of the Year. Duke Lemmens of Oaks Christian and OPHS’ Pat Henggeler are coDefensive Linemen of the Year.

Eagle playmakers Kyle Shorten, Chris Dacar and Tony Scaletta all made the first-team defensive squad, as did Oaks Christian’s Tommy Grillo.
