Thanks for voting for Prop 90 On behalf of the “Citizens 4 Redevelopment Reform” I would like to thank the citizens of Moorpark for voting yes on Proposition 90. In Moorpark the final citywide count was 53.5 percent yes votes to 46.5 percent no votes. This is 7.1 percent more yes votes than no votes. The statewide vote count on Proposition 90 was 47.6 percent yes votes to 52.4 percent no votes amounting to a 4.8 percent more no votes than yes votes. Citywide in Moorpark, 10 out of 11 precincts voted for proposition 90. And the precinct we lost, we lost by only 27 votes. These ballot numbers are from the “County of Ventura Statement of Vote” dated Dec. 2. We are grateful that the people of Moorpark hold dear the basic American ideal that a property owner should not be forced to sell his home to a government agency and then have the agency turn it over to a developer for financial gain. We do recognize that eminent domain may be used to acquire property for public projects such as roads, schools, libraries and fire stations when these projects benefit the general public. We hope that our elected public servants will take the outcome of the recent election into account when the proposed amendment to the Moorpark Redevelopment Agency ordinance comes up for a final vote. May our city fathers take the peoples’ will to heart when they vote in the near future on this very fundamental American property rights issue. Besides the election results, the Moorpark Redevelopment Agency has the recommendation from the Project Area Committee to consider. The Project Area Committee is an advisory group of local residents and business owners formed by the agency to review the proposed amendment and make recommendations to the City Council on the agency’s eminent domain authority. After five public meetings and a lot of earnest review and study, the committee recommended to the agency to choose Option One and not to use eminent domain on residential property. Again, we wish to thank the people of our beloved Moorpark for their continuing support. Rigoberto Barrera Moorpark |
