Reaction to day labor site Regarding the proposed downtown Moorpark day labor site, I agree that the city should craft and enforce a law to prohibit and/or limit loitering at The Tipsy Fox or other locations. I agree it is "blight," as termed in the Nov. 24 Moorpark Acorn. However, if there is to be some kind of patio area built with vending machines and clean bathroom facilities (amenities that are not found at any of our city parks that I frequent) I strongly agree with David Bagwell that no tax dollars should be used. It should instead be funded through private donations to Catholic Charities. How about having the day laborers contribute on a per diem, weekly or monthly basis for use of any such facility? How about charging a fee to the people who utilize the services of day laborers when they drive up to pick up workers for their projects? Better yet, why can't there be some kind of list of workers and their skills that Catholic Charities can maintain to match day laborers with upcoming day jobs so as to eliminate the need for dozens of people to stand around for hours each and every single day? This may eliminate the need for a lounge at all. Frankly, I also don't see what's wrong with "immigration and local law enforcement officials cruising the Tipsy Fox parking lot on a daily basis," as mentioned in the Nov. 24 editorial as a bad option. I think it is their job to do so. I do agree with the editorial that having the situation remain as it currently exists is not a good option. However, to use our tax dollars for a lounge is wrong. Overburdened middleclass taxpayers and business people like David Bagwell are hard-working men and women who are trying to support their families. Linda DeMonte Burg Moorpark |
