Respect needed on immigrant issue
This letter is in response to the one written by Ms. Christina Torres in the Moorpark Acorn May 26. Instead of taking the high road and engaging in an honest, intellectual debate, Ms. Torres elected to take the low road.
Since the facts are not on her side, she elects to intimidate and demean Ms. Strickland by dragging out the same tired argument of labeling someone who doesn't agree with her as a bigot and racist. What ever happened to having respect and tolerance for opposing viewpoints? Everyone is entitled to their opinion but demeaning them by accusing them of racism is pathetic.
There is nothing is Ms. Strickland's statements that are racist. She is merely stating facts and making an argument for legislation to control the illegal immigrant problem.
Yes, Ms. Torres, illegal immigrants are good people. They work hard to better themselves, support their families and they do contribute to the economy. But the fact remains that they are here illegally. There is no justification for being here illegally. Desiring a better life is admirable but entering the country should be done legally.
We need a rational, compassionate, guest worker program that permits aliens to work here, but also permits us to secure our sovereign border, know who is here and ensure the wellbeing of both guest workers and U.S. citizens. A pathway to citizenship already exists and is through the appropriate legal channels. Breaking the law should not be rewarded with amnesty.
Let's stop the hateful rhetoric and engage in honest debate. Steve Bilbrey Moorpark
