When it comes to public safety, an ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure When it comes to public safety, an ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure It’s hard to believe that historical High Street (a picturesque stretch of four small-town blocks stretching from Spring Street to Moorpark Avenue) only has crosswalks at either end–and nowhere between. This arrangement has been great for motorists because today’s giant trucks and SUVs can roar down the street (often well above the posted speed limit) and utilize High Street as a shortcut and time saver. The street is extremely busy, especially during rush and lunch hours. That there are few vehicle/pedestrian mishaps is nothing short of a miracle when you consider the lack of crosswalks. Not long ago, a fomer Moorpark city official was asked about the absence of crosswalks. He answered that pedestrians are safer because they’re much more careful when they cross streets without a crosswalk. Whew! Utilizing that kind of logic, we wouldn’t need seatbelts or air bags because people would drive more carefully without them. Common sense should prevail. City officials should consider crosswalks at Magnolia, Bard and Walnut. Without them, those intersections are dangerous. |
