Moorpark Musketeers in CIF baseball playoffs
Moorpark Musketeers in CIF baseball playoffs By Steve Ames Special to The Acorn
Moorpark High head coach Scott Fullerton had the right idea as his team played through the baseball season.
And now, as the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division II playoffs begin, the Musketeers (18-9 overall, 10-4 Marmonte League) will be playing the Righetti/Santa Maria Warriors (16-12 overall, 8-8, the Pac 5 League’s No. 2 team), today on their home diamond at 3:15 p.m.
Not wanting Moorpark, the league’s No. 1 seeded team, to lose sight of its playoffs goal, Fullerton–as the Musketeers prepared for their final game against the Agoura Chargers–said that "we’re going to get it done by just focusing on what we’re doing."
Moorpark won its final five league games, beginning April 28, to be assured of a at least a first place tie in the league with the Thousand Oaks Lancers: Simi Valley Pioneers, 4-0; Westlake Warriors, 6-1, Royal Highlanders, 7-4; Newbury Park Panthers, 13-5, and the Agoura Chargers, 4-1.
Offensive leaders throughout the season have included junior shortstop Justin Bogoyevac, senior first baseman Billy Butler, junior catcher Cody Dee, senior pitcher/infielder Kevin Hernandez, sophomore second baseman Ryne Intelkofer, senior center fielder Troy Loehr and senior left fielder Cory Swenson.
Fullerton, discussing the play of junior third baseman Nick Dingman and Loehr, fourth and fifth batters in the lineup, said that "they came up big. They don’t get rattled in clutch situations. I think they really thrive on those situations. They stay calm and get the job done. They’ve been real consistent all year."
Senior pitcher Jason Breckley, who twisted an ankle prior to Spring Break, has come back to play as well as prior to the twist. With Breckley and junior pitcher John Bostwick, the Musketeers have two strong starters.
From the bullpen and as a closer, junior pitcher Drew Dowl has provided Moorpark with the backbone it has needed to frequently give the Musketeers the edge.
"Good teams will have a guy behind him (the starter) that’s ready to step in and we have that kind of a pitching staff," Fullerton said.
The Musketeers have also been bolstered by the play of junior catcher Matt Chrans, junior infielder Ryan Dimmitt, senior pitcher/outfielder John Mulloy, senior pitcher/outfielder Tyler Randall, senior pitcher/first baseman Jimmy Righi junior infielder Chris Tucker, senior outfielder Shawn Vail and junior outfielder Tyler Ziegeler.
"I’m proud of the guys," the coach said. "They battled. They’re on a pretty good roll right now and we just need to keep going one game at a time, right until the end."
Second round games–in the single elimination playoffs—will be on Tuesday, quarterfinal games are May 28 and the semifinal games are on June 1. The Division II championship game will be on June 5 at Dodger Stadium.
