Horses provide therapy for veterans
      A Moorpark equine specialist is using horses to help returning veterans who suffer from severe battle-related stress. Tedi Tate, owner of two horses used for psychotherapy, helps veterans and their families at the Swan Hill Ranch in Moorpark. Her program is called the Caballine Alliance. Tate said the way the two horses relate will affect patients differently.

City to collect electronic waste, batteries
      The city of Moorpark will host a free electronic waste collection event for businesses and residents from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fri., Sept. 17, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., Sept. 18 at the Moorpark Public Services Facility, 627 Fitch Ave., behind the Police Services building off Spring and Flinn. No appointment is necessary.

Webelos troops provide adventure for boys
      Boys in Simi Valley and Moorpark are invited to experience the Webelos Woods Boy Scout program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., Sept. 11 at Corriganville Park, 7001 Smith Road, Simi Valley. Webelos Woods is an adventure designed to introduce fifthand sixth-grade boys and their parents to the Boy Scout troops in the Simi Valley/Moorpark area.

Groups can recognize their volunteers at luncheon
      All Ventura County organizations are invited to honor their volunteers at the Ventura County Volunteer Coordinators Council’s 2010 Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Tues., Sept. 21 at the Camarillo Ranch, 201 Camarillo Ranch Road. Check in will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon followed by luncheon and program from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Program offers residents help with utility bills
      Qualified residents who cannot pay for their energy needs due to an unplanned hardship may be eligible to receive assistance with their gas and/or electric bill through the Salvation Army of Simi Valley. The program can make a onetime bill payment up to $1,500 through Sept. 18.

Tomatoes make for good picking
      Residents can pick their own Roma tomatoes over Labor Day weekend on Sat. and Sun., Sept. 4 and 5 at Underwood Farms, 3370 Sunset Valley Road, Moorpark. Pickers should bring containers of equal size that will not hold more than 50 pounds to make weighing easier. Hours are 6 a.m. to noon.
